Will Smith Company To Release TV Show About Straight Edge Crew
Overbrook Entertainment, a film and television production company formed by everyone’s favorite Bel-Air prince, Will Smith, is currently in production for an FX drama focused around a chicago Straight Edge crew, Courage Crew. Championed by Smith’s wife, Jada, the Courage Crew drama will be written by Robert Munic, writer of Runnin’.
Personally i do not think this idea is a good one. All this will do is re enforce negative beliefs towards the straight edge population. Courage Crew has been notorious for violence towards non edge people. Ive been straight edge for 10 years ( for as long as knew what sXe was). Personally i think this will be a repeat of the Reno situation where a group of straight edgers bludgend two other kids almost to death. This issue was brought up on Geraldo at large where singer Karl Buechner represented the Straight edge movement. He did this very poorly, he didnt ever admit on the interview once, that what the Straight edge kids did was wrong. This gave the Public a terrible misrepresentation of the sXe movement
as i have said on many blogs about the subject. i fell that we should join together and try to stop this. try to clean up the bad name the media has given us. if john gotti can be a known mob boss and still gather respect and trust from many people in nyc without using fear, we should be able to get a better name then the one media has given us.
honestly i think its a great idea. and i cant wait to see the show. i think this show will really get to the point in show people whats up. maybe you dont have militant beleifs…i do. thats why i think this show is going to be great.

this is a HORRIBLE idea. it is going to pidgeon-hole straight edge as a gang. Courage Crew has become notorious for violence (see the Reno ordeal), and i believe a lot of the former members, or members involved in reno, had been arrested and or have served time behind bars. i will bet you anything that they are going to try and make this a sXe version of the Sopranos, over dramatizing everything and i bet they are going to stress the violence. Not everyone is militant. sXe is about making yourself the best you can be, and not polluting your body. i kinda have a bad feeling that this is going tobe left out of the show altogether.

Courage Crew is based out of Eaton Ohio, there are alot of dudes up in michigan, Indiana and the rest of the u.s. so maybe they were using chicago as a reference.

Will Smith is down with bands like Bury Your Dead and shit, he’s definitely into hardcore, but making a show about CXCB probably isn’t a good idea.

Haha pumped. Sure courage crew doesnt represent what every straight edge person or group is about but they stray true to what they believe and stand together weither you agree or not. Plus their entertaining and who wants to say no to them haha.
FYI, Dave is a very nice and chilled out dude. I just talked to him last Thursday. Mostly all of them are pretty cool if you don’t act like a dumbass around them. But this whole show idea, I don’t think it’s a very good one. Mainly because people will have misrepresentations on what straight edge is really all about. Secondly, everyone and their mothers will be claiming it with no idea where it came from and more little kids will be showing up and shows pissing everyone off. Not good.
I’ve been in the Ohio scene for many years. And I’ve had my run ins with CC before. I’m not edge. I respect those who do it for themselves non-militantly, but pushing beliefs onto others, especially through violence like Courage Crew does, is tyrannical and the ideology should be banished. They should be treated int he same regard as Nazi Skins in the scene.
Militant straight edge overshadows everything positive about straight edge and hardcore and opens up so many paths of hypocrisy. For example, Courage Crew kids attack those who are not sXe, but will support bands like Terror, who’s lead singer sold out (Chris Alsop - Suffocate Faster - let’s Scott him stay at his house)? They’re militant against and do not support my beliefes, but listen to Blood for Blood, Madball, Agnostic Front, Death Before Dishonor and support them? They’re against smoking because it’s a vascular contricting carcinogent, but they drink 8 energy drinks a day? Ohh wait, let’s not forget the 3rd X in ‘XXX’ stands for don’t fuck, and the guys go and have unprotected and unmeaningful sex all the time. Does anyone see the problem here?
The sad thing is, I know Will and Jada Smith both support Courage Crew. Will was almost a CC member. I just hope that this documentary does not glorify CC actions or give them a platform to spew their hatred. At least Nazi’s hated ALL non-anglo-saxons and didn’t pick and choose. Courage Crew and any straightedge militant crew are nothing but hypocritical gang members that ruin the hardcore scene. They’ll always put themselves above the scene and destroy it. Look at Dayton. Good lord, we can’t even get a good show here anymore and our scene was thriving a long time ago. Why? Because of CC. They’re a joke.

You obviously do not realize that when hardcore started it was a unified scene. It didn’t matter if you smoke or drank or were straight. Ray Cappo could sit next to and fight with Jimmy Gestapo (see Donahue episode in the 80’s). The only thing militant straightedge accomplishes is make straightedge look negative.
If you want to push your beliefs onto people through debate, discussion, education, information, hell dude, I’m all for that. But through violence is ignorance, hatred, stupidity, and everything this country and our scene is against.
