In The Studio with the Gaslight Anthem: Photo and Article by: Mike McDougal
Going into Mad Dog Studios in Burbank, CA with Gaslight Anthem today brought a new rejuvenation of sorts for my feelings on where music is headed. Stating that their influences range from Lucero, Against Me! And Jawbreaker, and combining a mixture of the three would create a volatile explosion in the heart of any grassroots punk fan. For me today, that explosion happened as I photographed the band in the studio and chatted with vocalist/guitarist Brian Fallon about the recording process for their latest album, ’59 Sound’, set to be released by SideOneDummy Mid August. Fallon states that this is a new step for the band since their previous albums have been recorded live, so to be in a studio is an incredible experience. Hot Water Music’s own Chris Wollard previously stopped by the studio to lend vocals to a track. Fallon exclaimed, “I don’t care if we sell one copy of the album, Chris from Hot Water Music did guest vocals!” From the clips of the upcoming tracks that I heard, the album has a blues feel to it, and the band stays true to their punk roots. The band made it very clear that they are in this for the love of the music, not for making millions, which completely revived my faith in touring bands.
